Should hard coat anodizing be sealed?

Generally, when hard coat anodizing is applied for wear resistance, the coating is not sealed (except for PTFE seals), which is the default in most specifications. On the other hand, if corrosion resistance or a combination of corrosion and abrasion resistance is the primary purpose, the hard coat anodizing should be sealed. In general, all stained hard coat anodizing will require sealing to ensure the dye will not fade or bleach. Sealing can be accomplished with deionized water, sodium dichromate, nickel acetate, PTFE, or a combination of two or more of these.

Can certain surfaces be masked off so they are Hardcoat Anodized?

All 3 types of anodic coatings are electrical insulators so when an electrical grounding surface is required or in order to maintain close dimensional tolerances, surfaces can be readily masked such that those areas will remain anodize free. This can be done using simple rubber plugs, 3D printed silicone stop-offs, precision die-cut custom decals or painted-on lacquer applied by hand or CNC programed robot. 7-swords prides itself on having in-house, state-of-the-art masking capabilities.

How does hard coat anodizing affect the dimensions of a part?

All anodizing is a conversion coating, where a portion of the substrate surface is converted from primary aluminum to alumina. Generally, with Type III anodizing, 1/2 of the coating thickness penetrates to the surface of the part while the other 1/2 builds up on the surface. Therefore, for a typical 0.002” thickness requirement, there is a 0.001” dimensional variation per surface. For any new part, Anoplate ensures that the required specifications are included in the ordering documentation. When tight tolerances are required, we will work closely with our customers to ensure that the coating thickness achieves the desired final product dimensions.

What does Hardcoat Anodize / MIL-A 8625 Type III look like?

Unpigmented (ie Class 1) hard coat anodizing will change the color of the aluminum depending on the specific alloy and anodic thickness. The color of aluminum after hard-coat anodizing depends on the alloy and the thickness of the coating. Many 6xxx series aluminum will be a dark grayish black, while most 7xxx and 2xxx series will be a more gunmetal gray color. With some alloys, the color of the aluminum after hard coat anodizing will be grey/bronze. For pigmented Type 2 coatings, black is by far the most commonly specified and will give a very pleasing, even appearance. Other colors will have an uneven finish and appearance due to the inherently dark nature of the unpigmented coating. If you need a color other than black, you need to sample before production.

How is hard coat anodizing different from other types of anodizing?

Aluminum anodizing is generally divided into three types. Type I is chromate anodized (or chrome substitute) and is very thin, approximately 0.0001 inch thick. Type II is traditional sulfuric acid anodizing and can be decoratively dyed in almost any color in thicknesses from 0.0002 – 0.0006”. Hard coat anodizing is Type III and is done under more stringent process conditions to produce harder, denser, thicker and more wear-resistant coatings. Hardcoat thicknesses can range from 0.0005 to 0.0030” and beyond but depend on the specific alloy being anodized.

What is Hardcoat Anodize?

Hardcoat Anodize or simply Hard Anodize is a dense anodic coating of aluminum oxide applied by converting a properly cleaned and deoxidized aluminum alloy component into an oxide film using a suitable electrolyte, typically sulfuric acid cooled to nearly freezing and applied voltages upwards of 100 volts at an applied current density of 24-36 amps per square foot.

What is stainless steel?

There is not only one type of stainless steel. The term applies to a group of iron-based alloys containing at least 10.5% chromium, making stainless steel highly resistant to corrosion. This chromium forms a very thin layer on the surface of the steel to prevent rust and other types of corrosion. Except for chromium, the carbon content in stainless steel shall not exceed 1.2%.
