Why do Americans say aluminum and the British say aluminum?

Why do Americans say aluminum and the British say aluminum?
Aluminum, with the extra i, is the BrE spelling and has been considered "correct" for decades. But whoever discovered and named the element couldn't decide for themselves what was "correct". Sir Humphry Davy, who discovered the element in 1807, first named the metal aluminum, which was soon changed to aluminum.
