6061 T6 Aluminum is an alloy composed of Aluminum, Magnesium and Silicon. It has a very high tensile strength (185 MPa or 27 ksi) and has good formability and weldability. It also has excellent corrosion resistance and is heat treatable, making it an excellent choice for many different types of applications.
The "T6" designation refers to the tempering process that aluminum undergoes during manufacturing. The process gives the metal better mechanical properties, such as a higher yield strength than other aluminum alloys. Therefore, 6061 T6 aluminum is often used for aircraft components where strength is critical but weight needs to be kept to a minimum.
