Injection molding is becoming more environmentally friendly as mechanical efficiency improves and materials such as thermoset polymers are able to withstand extreme temperatures and conditions.
While there is some material waste in injection molding, it is less than in many other manufacturing processes. Of course, the exact materials used also have an impact on the environment, including their useful life, whether they can come from recycled materials, and how they are disposed of. The carbon footprint of the life cycle of the products created also needs to be considered, including the carbon footprint of the manufacturing process.
Advances in modern injection molding machines mean they now use 20% to 50% less energy than they did a decade ago.
