All anodizing is a conversion coating, where a portion of the substrate surface is converted from primary aluminum to alumina. Generally, with Type III anodizing, 1/2 of the coating thickness penetrates to the surface of the part while the other 1/2 builds up on the surface. Therefore, for a typical 0.002” thickness requirement, there is a 0.001” dimensional variation per surface. For any new part, Anoplate ensures that the required specifications are included in the ordering documentation. When tight tolerances are required, we will work closely with our customers to ensure that the coating thickness achieves the desired final product dimensions.
