How does a CNC lathe work?
1. Make a CAD model
Engineers and mechanics use design software such as Solidworks and Autodesk Fusion 360 to generate CAD models of their specific components.
2. Convert CAD model to CNC machine tool
The CAD model is then imported into a computer-aided manufacturing system. When executed correctly, this process generates a series of numerical instructions called G-code, which determine the operation of the CNC machine. These G-code commands specify the movement and speed of the machine, enabling it to manufacture the desired component exactly.
3. CNC milling machine preparation
Securely secure the workpiece or block of material into the lathe chuck and perform all necessary steps to configure the lathe.
4. Start the turning process
Start the CNC turning process by loading a program. A specialized cutting tool rotating at high speed or set at a fixed number of revolutions per minute removes material from a workpiece until the desired part is exactly replicated.
