Electric discharge machining is an essential machining equipment in industry, machinery, and machining industries. The most common discharge equipment are "wire cutting", "electric spark", "punching machines" and so on.
Although both belong to electric discharge machining, the principles of EDM and wire cutting are very different. Wire cutting uses molybdenum wire and copper wire as electrodes, while the discharge electrode is generally made of graphite, copper alloy and other materials with good conductivity, good melting point and resistance to electrical corrosion.
EDM requires a medium to act as a separator. The reason why it can corrode product materials is the high-temperature melting caused by instantaneous breakdown. Therefore, whether it is wire cutting or EDM, it is a slow processing process, and the accuracy can be guaranteed due to the low efficiency.
As far as the processing size accuracy is concerned, the wire cutting (slow wire cutting) equipment can reach up to 0.5 μm when the equipment is good, the best fast wire cutting can reach 0.01 mm, and the highest precision of the spark machine can reach 1 μm. Surface finish is an important index to measure the quality of a part. The wire-cutting machine can reach a surface of 0.8 μm, and the EDM is about 1 μm.
